Mark 1:14-28
The message of Jesus (1:14-15)
The call of Jesus (1:16-20)
The authority of Jesus (1:21-28)
Discussion questions:
What are the practical implications/applications of the fact that the primary, essential message of Jesus was good news rather than good advice?
Mark portrays Jesus calling his followers (Simon and Andrew, James and John) away from their families and vocations - things they might be tempted to build their identities upon. What things are people today, in our culture, tempted to build their identities upon? How does Jesus call us away from that temptation and toward building our identity on him?
How does the fact that Jesus teaches with authority (as “the author”) shape our view of God’s written Word, the Bible? How does the fact that Jesus demonstrates authority over evil spirits shape the way we consider the demands he makes upon our lives?
Where are you most resistant to the authority of Jesus? What theological truths (about the purposes, character, or life of Jesus) help you to renew your trust in him and your submission to his authority?
